A personal story

July 06, 2025

In my role as a financial advisor, I often discuss the significance of long-term care planning. My own family has been facing the challenges of caregiving for the past two years which is having a profound impact.

My father was diagnosed with dementia several years ago.  About three years after losing my mom, we realized that we needed more eyes on Dad, who lives on a ranch without close neighbors.  As is often the case, we started out hiring someone to visit him two half days per week.  Recently, we made the decision to increase the schedule to daily.  I have also noticed this same pattern when working with clients dealing with similar situations.  A lot of people who need care start out needing a little help at first, then the need for care becomes greater.

Some of the challenges we have faced have been:

  • Emotional Strain: The stress of balancing caregiving with personal and professional responsibilities.
  • Financial Burden: The high costs associated with in-home care and medical expenses.
  • Logistical Hurdles: Coordinating care schedules and managing healthcare providers - especially since dad lives in the country.

My estimate to date is that we have spent about $50,000 on Dad's care and we are thankful and blessed that we have the resources for good care.  On the other hand, the cost of care is limitless and will increase significantly if Dad needs round-the-clock care or more-skilled medical professionals.  Currently, his level of care is mostly considered companionship with some housekeeping duties.  The hourly costs will soar as needs increase.

I share this personal story not just as a financial advisor, but as someone who has lived through the challenges of caregiving. Long-term care planning is not merely a financial decision; it's a commitment to your family's well-being and legacy.

There are options for funding and I will be sharing them in future articles.
