Do the professionals in your life use too much jargon?

February 21, 2023

I was working with a client last week and had to do a little bit of research to remind myself of some IRS rules.  I Googled, "Can an RMD from a 403b be used for a QCD?"

Financial advisors, attorneys, and CPAs are all bad about using too much jargon.  We try to be cognizant of this in my office but I'm sure confusing terminology sometimes slips by.  Clients need to be comfortable saying, "Stop, I have no idea what you're talking about.  Please explain in language I understand."  Afterall, the financial plan, tax, or legal situation is yours and you're the one who will deal with the consequences.

I think it was Albert Einstein who said that, "If you can't explain something well enough, you don't understand it well enough."

By the way... an RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) from a 403b (a type of pre-tax account commonly used by teachers) can NOT be used for a QCD (Qualified Charitable Deduction).
